'Spell-A-Brate' for a literacy council

MONROE - The Literacy Council of Green County, Ltd. is hosting a Scrabble tournament from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 in the second-floor conference room of the Monroe Public Library. Participants will play casual games of Scrabble with twists on the rules, refreshments and a silent auction. Registration is from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by two games of play, refreshments and silent auction. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. The cost is $20 per person. Seating is limited. All proceeds will benefit the Literacy Council.

The Literacy Council provides free and confidential training, materials, and support for adults with limited reading and English language skills. Services are provided through trained volunteers and staff, and are offered in small groups or in a one-on-one setting. Services include: pre-GED, GED, English as a Second Language, basic literacy, adult basic education, family literacy and workplace literacy.

The council is funded through donations and grants.

Lafayette County Dems to meet

DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Democratic Party is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct., 5 at its Darlington offices. The party office is in the Piggly Wiggly Plaza.

Party members and the public are welcome to attend.

VFW hosts weekly fish fry, special

MONROE - Monroe VFW Post 2312, 1428 17th Street, is hosting Fish Fry events from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on each Friday in October. The menu varies by day: On Oct. 1, it's beer battered catfish, on Oct. 8, Cod Augratin, on Oct. 15, Beer Battered Smelt, on Oct. 22 Door County Fish Boil; and on Oct. 29, seafood ragout.

AMVET meeting set for Tuesday

BELLEVILLE - An update on the White Clover "Remember Me" drive is on the agenda of an upcoming meeting of AMVET Post 69. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Chalet House meeting room.

Yester Year Auto Club plans outing

MONROE - The Yester Year Auto Club will go on its last tour of the summer this weekend. The tour is an overnight trip to Horicon Marsh.

The group will leave Dick's Piggly Wiggly at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and will return Sunday.

Detailed itinerary will be provided before the group departs.

Special Olympics breakfast slated

MONROE - The Green County Special Olympics is sponsoring its annual breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Moose Lodge in Monroe. Serving will be from 8 a.m. to noon.

The organization has 37 active athletes who participate in bowling, basketball skills, snow shoeing and track and field.

Volunteers are also involved with coaching, fundraising and chaperoning activities.

Proceeds from the breakfast go directly to local Green County athletes.
