Silvercreek to open for season May 29
FREEPORT - The Silvercreek and Stephenson Railroad, Silver Creek Depot, Freight House Gift Shop, Cooper Engine and Silvercreek Museum will all open for the 2011 season on Sunday and Monday, May 29 and 30,
Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The complex is located at 2954 S. Walnut Rd, Freeport, about a half-mile south of the Stephenson County fairgrounds.
The first train will leave the depot at 11 a.m. and run every hour on the hour.
The Silvercreek Museum will be open and will host its annual ice cream social. Sandwiches, chips, pie, cake/bars and beverages will be served each day. The cost to ride the train is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. The cost to tour the museum is $3 for adults with children under 12 admitted free.
The attractions are run by the Stephenson County Antique Engine Club: a not-for-profit educational organization made up of volunteers who are members of the Antique Engine Club. Proceeds from the open dates help to defray the cost of maintaining the property and equipment and to pay expenses necessary in the operation of the attractions.

FREEPORT - A limited number of commercial exhibitor spaces still remain for the 2011 Stephenson County Fair, which will be held July 12 to 17, in Freeport. Inside spaces are $175 for the week, with new exhibitors being offered a discounted rate of $125.

Bank to host free paper shred day
ARGYLE - First National Bank and Trust Company - 321 Milwaukee St., Argyle - will host a free paper shredding day from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, June 10.
Office Pro of Janesville will have a mobile shredding unit on-site to help community members securely dispose of paper documents, canceled checks, files, and other papers that are no longer required for personal records.
The free service is open to all community members.

Health Dept. offers grief support
DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Health Department will be offering a grief support group from 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday afternoon, beginning June 8 and ending July 13, at the Talmer Bank & Trust (formerly the First Banking Center), Darlington, in the lower level conference room.
The group is free and open to anyone who has experienced the death of a family member or friend. The six weekly sessions will consist of a brief presentation on some aspect of grief, opportunity for sharing and discussion in a safe environment, and light refreshments.
They will be led by Barbara Meyer, Rev. David Ritchie and Kristie Lueck, all of whom are former hospice team members.

4-H Foundation holds golf event
MADISON - The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will hold its ninth annual Southern Golf Classic on Monday, June 27, at Lake Windsor Golf Club; and the 4th Annual Northern Golf Classic on Monday, June 13, 2011, at Kilkarney Hills Golf Club in River Falls.
Both golf classics will be four-player, 18-hole scrambles. The Southern Golf Classic will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and includes a grilled lunch after golf.
The Northern Golf Classic will begin with a grilled lunch and a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and includes a dinner after golf.
Registration for the Southern Golf Classic will be $95 per person, or $380 per foursome and includes cart, range balls, team prizes, hole prizes, and meal.
Registration for the Northern Golf Classic will be $80 per person, or $320 per foursome and includes cart, range balls, team prizes, hole prizes, and meal.
Silent auctions will also be held at both locations. Silent auction items may include 4-H artwork, tickets to sporting events, and gift certificates.

Tschanz wins WREA honors
MONROE - The Wisconsin Retired Educator's Association (WREA) recently recognized Melva Tschanz from the Green County unit for her contributions to WREA, at the association's annual convention, which was held from May 10 to 12.
In recognition of her work, Melva was awarded a pin and placed on the WREA Honor Roll for those members who make a difference.
WREA is a non-partisan, independent organization with more than 15,000 members statewide.
It had been recognized for its role in protecting the public pension fund, advocating for public education and supporting the interests of senior citizens.

Canoe Fest Road/Run Walk
DARLINGTON - The Darlington Canoe Fest Road Run/Walk will be held Friday, June 10, with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the front entrance parking lot of Collins Park Campgrounds, Darlington.
The family-oriented event is for kids and adults of all ages and starts with a 5-mile run along the Pecatonica River and 4-wheeler trail, beginning at 6:30 p.m., a 2-mile run and walk at 6:45 p.m., and ending with a 1-mile run for boys and girls 10 and under, starting at approximately 7:15 p.m.
Refreshments and shower facilities will be available at the finish line for all participants.
First-place plaques will be presented for the 2-mile, 5-mile, and 1-mile age divisions; and second- and third-place medals for each division. All 1-mile runners will receive a participation ribbon.

Master Gardeners to host bus trip
MONROE - The South Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners welcome garden enthusiasts to join them Saturday, June 25, for their second annual Garden Bus Trip.
This year the group travels to Boerner Botanical Gardens. Boerner Botanical gardens, an internationally renowned horticultural showplace in the Milwaukee County Parks, offers an annual garden, bog walk, herb garden, perennial borders, rose garden, day lily walk, peony garden, rock garden and shrub mall.
The day-long event includes round-trip transportation on a coach bus, leaving from the Pleasant View Complex parking in Monroe at 8 a.m., paid admission to tour Boerner Botanical gardens in the morning, and a catered lunch, for $55.
The trip also includes an afternoon tour of downtown Greendale and the Reiman Publication Visitor Center. Reiman Publications is home to the Taste of Home test kitchen.
The bus will return to Monroe at approximately 4:30 p.m. that day.
Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
