Legion birthday dinner is Saturday

MONROE - The Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post No. 84 and the Auxiliary Unit will host a Green County American Legion birthday dinner on Saturday, March 24 at the post home, 1625 12th Ave.

Members of all posts in Green County are invited to join the dinner, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. A Swiss steak dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $8 per plate. A special program has been planned immediately following the dinner.

Lenten Cantata scheduled for Sun.

MONROE - The adult choir of Union Presbyterian Church is presenting the Lenten Cantata, "The Weeping Tree", by Joseph M. Martin at the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, March 25 at the church, 2707 5th St.

The cantata includes narrations, solos and choral pieces. The central focus of this work is the "weeping tree" (or cross) and some of the other symbols associated with the crucifixion, including the robe, crown of thorns, nails and the blood of Christ.

Those singing in the choir are Susan Anderson, Bobbie Bernet, Hans Bernet, Sara Bodell, George Breadon, Dennis Cappel, Larry Coffey, Natalie Dillon, Tracy Dillon, Katie Doyle, Tina Duemler, Nan Edmunds, Jonna Heins, Ann Kloepping, Cindi Miller, Daryl Miller, Gerry Miller, Jo Ellen Mosher, Paul Nelson, Jane Olson, Kathy Reffue, Brad Richardson, Marilyn Sandin-Ross, Jacob Scherer, Donna Schluesche and George Vernon. Narrators are Natalie Dillon and Jacob Scherer. Soloists are Susan Anderson and Hans Bernet. The choir is accompanied by Erica Hegi and directed by Maynard Heins.

The event is open to the public.

Brodhead

Historical society to meet Monday

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 26 at the Bank of Brodhead, 806 East Exchange St.

Guest speaker is Don Meyer, Mid-Continent Railway Museum, North Freedom. He will discuss the "Badger No. 2," a rail car built specifically for the Wisconsin Conservation Commission in 1912 to deliver live fish hatchlings from the state fish hatcheries to lakes in northern Wisconsin. The car has a rich history and recently completed a $1 million restoration at the museum.

The meeting is open to the public.

Palm Sunday, Easter services set

MCCONNELL, Ill. - McConnell United Methodist Church is hosting worship services on Palm Sunday and Easter at the church, 211 N. Hulbert Road.

Palm Sunday's worship is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 1. The children will sing and parade the palms during the worship service. Easter Sunday's worship is 8 a.m. Sunday, April 8. The worship will include the Sunrise Service led by the youth.

A community Easter breakfast will be held following the service in Fellowship Hall. Items served include baked ham, scrambled eggs, hot cross buns, juice and coffee. There will be no Sunday School or 10:30 a.m. service on Easter Sunday.
