Monroe Badger Days set for June 20-21

MONROE - The 2011 Monroe Badger Days, sponsored by Colony Brands, Inc., will be held Monday, June 20 and Tuesday, June 21. The two-day affair will consist of a number of events to raise money for the University of Wisconsin (UW) athletic program.

Last year's Monroe Badger Days raised more than $76,000.

This year's events include golf outings at the Monroe Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, the Badger Tailgate Party with music from The Jimmy's at the Pat Kubly residence - 62114th Ave. - on Monday, and the sports preview and dinner at Ludlow Mansion with Badger head coaches and UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez.

Relay campaign starts June 19

MONROE - For the week of June 19 to June 25, Relay for Life of Green County is urging local businesses to take part in the "Paint the Town Purple!" campaign.

Local businesses are encouraged to designate a day when employees will wear the color purple, showing their support for survivors, caregivers and the Relay. Stores are also asked to decorate their window displays in purple. In addition, ribbons and signs will be placed in downtown locations.

Historical Society meeting June 23

MONTICELLO - The Monticello Area Historical Society will hold a general meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at Zwingli United Church of Christ, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello.

The guest speaker will be Shelley Ferguson, who will discuss experiences in Peru. Learn about the lineage of Shaman healers still in existence, Machu Picchu, simple ways to happiness, as well as why Third World countries rate highest on the list of happiest people in the world.

The meeting is open to the public.

Non-perishable food drive slated June 27

MONROE - Wisconsin Community Bank will host a food drive for the Green County Inter-Church Food Pantry from June 27 to July 1 and will accept donations dropped off at 1717 10th St., Monroe.

Those wishing to donate should drop off non-perishable, non-expired items like complete meals, meals in a box, canned fruit and vegetables, soup, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce, dry pasta, and cereal.

Lobby hours at Wisconsin Communty Bank are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday; and 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

"Lena's Got Talent" slated July 10

LENA - The Lena Community Park District will host a talent show, "Lena's Got Talent," on Sunday, July 10. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place.

Farm celebration, reunion is July 2

MONROE - Greg and Emily (Isely) Wild and their family will host a sesquicentennial farm celebration and Isely reunion rain or shine at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2 at N5540 Isely Lane, Monroe.

According to a release by the family, in 1861 then-recent Swiss immigrants Christian and Verena Iseli purchased 80 acres of land that is still in the family 150 years later. To celebrate, a share-a-dish picnic lunch will be served. Table service, coffee, and lemonade will be furnished. Any photos or memorabilia attendees may have is encouraged and would be appreciated by the family.

Grant applications are now accepted

MONROE - Green County Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is actively accepting grant applications for their Care in Community funding. The grants can be for Supplemental Funds based on fundraising monies raised or Helping Hand grants to cover material for charitable work projects.

Grants are open to service groups and individuals regardless of denomination. Six Thrivent member households must be involved in the project as a stipulation for approval.

Many organizations and individuals in Green County have been on the receiving end of Thrivent dollars, such as Habitat for Humanity, the Merit Center Fire Department, Brodhead Middle School and the Eberle Family Fire Fundraiser.

Silly Saturday set for June 18

LENA - The Lena Community Park District will host Silly Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Splash Land Pool, Lena.

Among the day's events will be Disney Day from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be music, food, games, and fun for all. Those who dress as a Disney character or wear their Disney suit receive a prize.
