Pec River Fest slated July 15

LENA - The Lena Community Park District will host the fourth annual "Pec" River Fest on Friday, July 15 at McNeil's Damascus landing, as well as from Saturday, July 16 to Sunday, July 17 at McConnell's "Bobtown" landing.

Both landings will provide access to the Pecatonica River for canoeing, kayaking, small watercraft, fishing, wildlife viewing and other activities.

The catered pontoon rides will be Friday, July 15 during late afternoon and early evening at McNeil's Damascus landing, 4998 W. Cedarville Road, Lena. The cost is $20 per person, which includes an approximate one hour ride on the Pecatonica River and a catered, picnic style dinner.

The Summer Flotilla will be Saturday, July 16 from the McConnell "Bobtown" landing to McNeil's Damascus landing. The paddle features a leisure 7.9-mile scenic view of the Pecatonica River. Advance registration is preferred. Participants should bring their own canoes, kayaks, personal floatation devices, and paddles. A limited number of canoes will be available for rent.

The Illinois Paddling Council-sanctioned canoe and kayak races will be held Sunday, July 17. The event has more than 40 categories for race applicants. Racers will compete in amateur and professional series. The professional series will launch from the Browntown landing, a mile west of Wisconsin 11, and is about 18 miles. The amateur series will launch from Brewster's Landing, a mile east of Winslow, and is about 6.7 miles.

Teen Line program slated for July 19

FREEPORT - CONTACT of Northern Illinois will launch CONTACT Teen Line for ages 13 to 19 on Tuesday, July 19.

Teens are welcome to call (815) 232-7558 to speak to a teen volunteer. Hours of operation will be Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Discussion, potluck set for July 10

MONROE - Transition Green County will hold a discussion/potluck from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2810 6th St., Monroe. The discussion for the night will be green construction and remodeling.

Transition Green County is a loose network of local businesses and individuals who share common environmental and economical concerns. "We believe there is a change coming when we will all need to find satisfaction in consuming less, sharing more and building a resilient local economy," officials said in a release. "We hope to bring together the best and most creative thinkers in Green County to make the transition a smooth one for everybody."

The group recently focused on local food systems and looks to gather and share ideas on alternative or green construction and remodeling.

Attendees should bring a simple dish to pass and are encouraged to make something using local ingredients. Beverages, dishware, flatware and napkins will be provided. Youth are encouraged to attend, as there will be a "green construction" contest for them.

Group picnic set for July 12

MONROE - The Monroe Clinic Diabetes Support Group will host its annual indoor potluck picnic from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at the New Glarus Room (first floor) of Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe.

Attendees, who are to note the earlier start time, are asked to bring a dish to pass and a serving spoon. The clinic will provide the entree (grilled chicken);, as well as drinks and table settings.

Student elected at Badger Girls State

MONROE - Sarah Alexander, daughter of Barb Alexander, South Wayne, was elected to the position of County Executive in Hoard County as a result of the 2011 Badger Girls State election.

Alexander, who will be a senior at Monroe High School this fall, was sponsored to Badger Girls State by Zilmer Riley American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 84.

Education program slated for July 14

MONROE - Harbor House Memory Care will host an educational program called "Boost Your Noodle" from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 14 at the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St., Monroe. There is no cost to attend, and RSVPs are requested due to limited space. Light refreshments will be served.

"Boost your Noodle" is designed to provide information about simple things that you can implement into your daily routine so that you can live a brain healthy lifestyle.

Tammy Pence, Director of Community Relations for Harbor House will be the presenter. Tammy has more 25 years experience in working with individuals and families affected with memory loss, according to a release.

Grant to support playground

MONROE - Rainbow Childcare, Inc. recently received a grant from the Clifford & Dorothy Reasa Charitable Fund of the Monroe Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc., to support playground activity equipment.

"Thanks to the Monroe Fund, Rainbow is able to upgrade the playground equipment on three playgrounds," Rainbow officials said in a release. "It is a state mandate to provide physical activities daily for the children in licensed centers and so important with the obesity issue in our children. We are truly grateful for this grant."

Church plans VBS on Sunday nights

McCONNELL - The McConnell United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School will be "Kickin' It Old School" with the Go Fish Guys from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 10, 17, 24 and 31.

All children, ages 3 to 12 years old, are welcome to sing songs, learn Bible stories, make crafts, play games and more. Those who attend at least three of the sessions will receive a free "Go Fish" T-shirt. Each week, money will be collected for the church's Mission Project (oneverse.org), which translates the Bible into different languages for the first time.
