B-ball team to host melanoma night

ARGYLE - The Argyle high school boys basketball team is hosting a Melanoma Awareness Night on Thursday, Feb. 17. The junior varsity game will begin the night's activities. There will be melanoma awareness information available and a representative from Ann's Hope Foundation will attend the event. Ann's Hope is based in Wisconsin and raises funds for research and awareness of the deadly cancer.

Melanoma can be prevented by using sunscreen and staying out of the sun and tanning beds. Last year the event was held in memory of Bob Makos, who lost his battle with melanoma on Oct. 6, 2009. Makos advocated for men to get regular skin checks.

Birthday party to honor presidents

DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Historical Society museum will host a party to celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in the museum's lower level.

The celebration gets underway following the LCHS quarterly meeting, which will feature Mineral Point historian Donald Schultz highlighting scenes from Washington's life from boyhood up to 1776, including some Revolutionary War experiences.

A trivia game about the life of Lincoln will follow. "This game will have some surprising components, sure to please not only history buffs but the general public," said LCHS Curator Fran Fink. For example, participants will learn about Tad Lincoln's White House pet and its destiny.

The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Participants are encouraged to attend in period dress, but casual dress is also appropriate. For more information, call (608) 776-8340, or e-mail lchs@mhtc.net.
