Local businesses support BBBS

MONROE - This December, Monroe Trucking and Kuhn employees gave games and snacks to provide children with long-term quality mentoring at schools in Green County. They responded to mittens hung on trees and walls identifying needs for Big Brothers Big Sisters school mentoring.

Also this month, Badger State Ethanol, Orchid, Monroe, Swiss Valley HOG, and C.G. Schmid, each gave $500 gifts to help children succeed. End-of-the-year grants to Big Brothers Big Sisters include Dr. Scholl Foundation, Community Enhancement and Monroe Fund. Big Brothers Big Sisters received $31,000 from United Way to mentor kids facing adversity and help them succeed in and out of school.

Big Brothers Big Sisters works with 137 elementary children and 128 high school mentors who look forward to meeting every week. Working on homework together and becoming friends changes children's lives for the better, forever. "We know the serious risks - school dropout rates, poverty, teen pregnancy - facing today's youth. People who support one-to-one mentoring are part of a proven solution," said Jean Busker, Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director. "When our kids gain self-esteem and ability to relate to others, we all succeed." Big Brothers Big Sisters also makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children.

December 2010 marks 25 years for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Green County. The organization is donor-supported and volunteer-driven. To get involved by donating or volunteering, call 325-7855 or visit 1505 9th St. in Monroe.
