Albany

Historical society to host fresh water pearls program

ALBANY - "Fresh Water Pearls" will be the program for the Albany Historical Society Meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 at the museum, 119 N. Water St.

George Johnson, Madison, will be the guest speaker at the Albany Historical Society's museum. Johnson recently published an article in the Wisconsin Magazine of History, Spring 2012 called "Wisconsin's Pearl Rush ... Its Wisconsin Beginnings."

Johnson grew up south of Brodhead and fished the Sugar River as a teenager. Old-timers would tell of a collection of pearls from the Sugar River once selling for a fortune in London. He will recount his research into this story and Albany's role in launching American rivers as an international source of gemstone quality pearls. Johnson will tell the many tales of the first pearl, the hysteria that quickly gripped the areas unusually staid citizenry and more.

There is no charge and visitors are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
