Area students to dance in 'Nutcracker'

Madison performances set for Saturday, Sunday include Monroe's Vestin children and Schmitt



MADISON - Dance Wisconsin is starting the production of the classic version of the original "Nutcracker" ballet. Performances will take place at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shannon Hall at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

Dancing from the Monroe area are Kierstyn, Quentin and Spencer Vestin, children of Paula and Chris Vestin. The Vestin children dance at the Brodhead Dance School, and Spencer is a new member of the Dance Wisconsin Dance Company. Kierstyn is dancing in the roles of a little party girl in Act I and a Bon with Mother Ginger. Quentin is dancing in the role of the naughty brother Fritz in Act I. Spencer is dancing multiple roles, Mouse King and Russian dancer.

Another Monroe native in the cast is Jessica Schmitt, daughter of Julie and Peter Schmitt. Schmitt dances with Monona Academy of Dance and is a member of the Mad City Dancers and Dance Wisconsin Company. She is dancing in the roles of Doll in Act I and Snowflake, Spanish and Waltz of the Flowers.

The Tchaikovsky score will be performed by the Dance Wisconsin orchestra and conducted by Taras Nahirniak. The Monona Grove High School singers will accompany several pieces.
