Area students compete in land judging contest

MONROE - One hundred ninety-three high school students from 56 teams and 16 Wisconsin schools participated in the 43rd annual University of Wisconsin-Platteville Land Judging Competition.

The UW-Platteville Soil Conservation/Agronomy student chapter and the UW-Platteville School of Agriculture sponsored the event. Local schools that participated were: Albany, Black Hawk, Monroe, Monticello, New Glarus, and Pecatonica.

The Monroe senior team received first place overall. Curt Marzolf received first place as an individual; Logan Wells came in second; and Tom Jenson received 11th place. The Monroe junior team, made up of eighth grade students, was 16th in the team placing. Mark Jenson received 36th as an individual; Troy Gorr came in 43rd; and Austin Minder received 69th.

In the contest, students evaluated four sites. Each student described soil and landscape features, rated the land capability class, noted major limitations for land use, and made recommendations for conservation practices.

Students were scored based on agreement between their evaluations and those of official contest judges. Judges included local Land Conservation and Natural Resources Conservation Service professionals and professors from UW-Platteville.

Individual award winners were: first, Curt Marzolf, Monroe, 356; second, Logan Wells, Monroe, 351; third, Tiffany Junk, Cassville, 345; fourth, John Hemmersbach, Cashton, 340; fifth, Tyler Bode, Potosi, 337. A perfect score is 400.

Team award winners were: first, Monroe, 1035; second, River Ridge, 977; third, Potosi, 976; fourth, Cashton, 975; and fifth, Cassville, 966.
