DARLINGTON - Emma Berget, Thad Brenum, Jeremy Calvert, Colton Carpenter, Tanner Havens, Kassi Kamps, LeeAnn Kurschner and Jordin Wedig were eight of 20 youth who attended the Quad-County 4-H Trip to Mackinac Island, July 22-25.
Berget, Brenum, Carpenter and Havens are members of the Wiota Happy Hour 4-H Club; Kamps and Wedig are members of Pleasant View 4-H, and Calvert and Kurschner are members of Willow Springs 4-H Club. The group was chaperoned by Lafayette County 4-H Volunteers Jackie Kamps and Rodney Kurschner and Lafayette County 4-H Youth Development Educator Jessie Potterton. The group was joined by 4-H youth and adults from Grant and Iowa Counties. Crawford County, the fourth county in the group, did not have any participants this year.
The annual four-day destination trip gives youth a chance to experience hands-on learning, strengthen life skills such as communication and leadership, gain knowledge to share back home, exchange ideas and form friendships with youth from the southwestern part of Wisconsin.
The youth traveled to Green Bay, Wis. with a stop at Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall of Fame to begin the trip. Then, they made the trek around Lake Michigan into the state of Michigan, where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet. They crossed the 5-mile Mackinac Bridge and stayed in Mackinac City, traveling to Mackinac Island on the second day. On the third day, they made their way to the south, on the east side of Lake Michigan, through Chicago. They stopped at Hard Rock Café and toured the Sears Tower and Navy Pier before departing for Wisconsin.
To be eligible for the trip, all of the youth participated in several activities throughout the summer. They completed two service projects and one fundraiser to be eligible for partial funding for the trip. The youth were supported by the Lafayette County 4-H Leaders' Association and the 4-H Friendship Fund of Lafayette County.
