Apple River: Christmas Bird Count reveals low number

APPLE RIVER - Close to 3,000 birds of 41 species were counted during the annual National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count in Jo Daviess County.

Six different species of common winter birds were recorded in low numbers, including tree sparrows, rock doves, starlings, horned larks, northern cardinals and black-capped chicakdees.

The results of the count over the years reflects the change in the county environment as it gradually changes from agriculture to housing developments.
