MONROE - Alpaca Farm owners, James and Lori Norquay of Sonshine Hill Alpacas welcome the community to their farm - N2395 Gempeler Road, Monroe, (next to Greenwood Cemetery) - as part of National Alpaca Farm Days. Sonshine Hill Alpacas will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 27-28, offering farm tours, refreshments and an opportunity to "touch and feel" the luxurious fiber.
Alpacas are gentle, friendly cousins of the larger llama, both natives of South America. James and Lori first brought their Alpacas home from Colorado in July 2007 and have since had three babies (crias) giving them a total of 10.
Sonshine Hill Alpacas have 5 huacaya (pronounced wah-ki-ya) and 5 suri (pronounced surrey) alpacas. Huacaya fiber is short, dense, crimpy and gives a wooly appearance, while suri fiber is silky and falls in pencil locks from their backs.
More information is available by calling (608) 325-3149.
