New bleachers coming to Albany High School

ALBANY — The Albany Board of Education accepted a donation of $66,635 from community member Mr. Harvey Kopp. The project will begin shortly after school ends in the month of June.

Donations to the new gym floor were engraved into an area on bleacher boards, and donors will be contacted prior to the commencement of the project. Donor’s family/group will be given the opportunity to keep the section of the engraved bleachers. The district will also be creating some type of plaque to be placed in the gym, recognizing your contribution to the district.

If interested in helping with the tear down of the bleachers or in buying boards taken from the bleachers, contact the school. The cost of the boards will be $5 per 16-foot board. Those who have contacted the school regarding their family’s engravement, boards will be set aside. If interested in plain bleacher boards, let the school know the number of boards. Depending on the number of requests, the district may have to prorate the number of boards received. All boards will be available in late summer or early fall for pick up. The school will contact to arrange these pick-up days and times.

Albany 1922 Middle/High School to come down

At the February Board of Education meeting, the funding for the demolition of the 1922 (old middle/high school) was approved.

The district has had several subcommittee meetings to discuss the project and the potential costs associated with the demolition. The building was closed when the new middle/high school was constructed in 1996. During the time it was closed, some cosmetic improvements were made to the building and it was used as a community center for several years.

With the building of the new addition in 2020, the transition of the home base for the community center was made possible with an area close to the commons being provided.

The 1922 building is costing the district additional money for heating, roof repairs and for the school district’s building insurance. To repair the structure to standards to be used as part of regular school operation was not practical and would not have been financially responsible.

Schedule for the demolition project

The actual demolition of the building will begin sometime in the middle of June with some internal asbestos removal beginning shortly after school ends on June 4.

The district will attempt to save the marquees over the entrances into the building. In the future, one or both of the marquees will be made into a historical marker to be kept as a reminder of the building.

The location of the building will be covered with gravel and used as a parking lot at the completion of the project. If interested in one last look inside the building or for have other questions, contact William Trow at 608-862-3225 ext. 2319 or emailed to william.trow@albany.k12.wi.us.
