ALBANY - It has been 125 years since the first class graduated from Albany High School.
In 1891, Nettie Flint Woodbury was the only graduating senior, and there were six graduates the next year. The graduating class of 2015 brought the total number to graduate from Albany to 2,719. There have been five years with more than 40 graduates, and the largest class to graduate was 1981 with 52. The classes are smaller now.
The Albany Alumni Association will honor the graduating class of 2016 at the annual Alumni Banquet on May 28 at the Lions Club building, 402 N. Cincinnati St. A booklet of all the graduates will be available at the banquet.
In 2002, the alumni association was formed to revitalize the Alumni Banquet. The group raises money by sponsoring an alumni basketball tournament, running a food stand at the tournament, holding a raffle, selling ads on the back of T-shirts, selling T-shirts and through donations. All the money goes toward scholarships. Since 2002, $51,000 has been awarded to graduating seniors.
The cost to attend the banquet is $15 for a roast beef meal prepared and served by Lion members. Send reservations and money to Dan Weber, N5926 Marie Court, Albany, WI 53502. The average attendance is about 200 and presents an opportunity to meet old classmates and friends.
