MONROE - Monroe High School students in Dan Saunders' advanced metals manufacturing class have earned national recognition for their accomplishments by winning awards in the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Awards program.

Joe Crubaugh earned the regional gold award for his fabrication of a 6-foot tilt bed ATV trailer, and Josh Smith earned regional bronze for fabricating various-sized windmill fans.

The United States is divided into four regions for the program: Monroe High School is in region one, which includes 18 states from Wisconsin to Maine, covering most of the upper Midwest and East Coast. The awards program requires students to submit a written report detailing the fabrication of a welded project. Along with the written text, a detailed drawing with welding symbols, bill of materials and photographs must be included.

The reports are then judged by region and the best nationally.

In addition to the awards, Crubaugh received $500 and a new Lincoln 140C Power MIG welder valued at $755 for the gold award, and Smith received $100 for the bronze.
