Volunteer training set for Jan. 22-23

MONROE - Currently, there are vacancies for local Disaster Responders in Green County. A special training weekend for new Red Cross Disaster Responders will take place Jan. 22-23 in Monroe. The American Red Cross is a volunteer-led non profit and relies on the gift of time and skills from community members to maintain its key role in providing disaster relief and preparedness.

Individuals can help people affected by disasters like floods, fires, tornadoes and hurricanes, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Freeport

Chess tournment is planned for Jan. 15

FREEPORT - The Route 20 Chess Club will hold a rated beginners' open and an open Swiss (non-elimination) tournament, events will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15. On-site registration will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m., in the Community Services Building (Building R) at Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport.

Players may also register in advance through the club website, route20chess.blogspot.com. Advance registration is appreciated.

The rated beginners open is for players who do not yet have U.S. Chess Federation ratings or are rated under 1200. It is a five-round Swiss tournament, with each player given 30 minutes to make all moves. The entry fee is $10 ($6 for Route 20 Chess Club members). Trophies will be awarded for first-, second- and third- place.

For chess enthusiasts who have never taken part in official tournament play, an RBO is the ideal introduction.

The open Swiss will be played in four rounds, with each player given 45 minutes to make all moves. The entry fee is $20 ($12 for club members), and at least 75 percent of entry fees will be returned as cash prizes.

Both events are sanctioned by the USCF; membership is required to participate in either event. Participants who are not USCF members may join at registration or purchase one-day tournament memberships for $12 ($7 for players age 24 and under).

Juda

Youth group to host lock-in

JUDA - The youth groups of the Juda Zion and Oakley Union United Methodist Churches will be hosting a lock-in starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22 to 7 a.m., Jan. 23 at the church in Juda.

The event will include a concert featuring the Christian teen bands of "The Holy Rollers" and "Redeemed" from the United Methodist Church in Platteville. Other activities will include video games and a movie along with fellowship with area youth.

Pizza and soda will be served during the event along with a light breakfast in the morning. Cost to attend the event is $7 to help cover cost food and the concert. Reservations to the event can be made by calling Dennis at (608)934-1228 before Jan. 18. The event is open to all youth eighth-grade to high school seniors.
