The cover features summer artwork created by the students. They are, from left to right, Hayley Rielly, Trinity Elmer, Nickolas Fenn, Mariah Erickson, Brady Buol, Grace Keith, Zach Brown and Jessica Gruenberg. In appreciation for the schools participation, a $1,000 check was presented to PTO President Melissa Thompson (back row).
MONROE - Ask a group of grade school kids what's the best part of summer, and you'll get a multitude of colorful ideas! It's an assignment that many of us remember laboring over in our youth, whether it was writing a story or coloring a picture.

Jim Wilson, brand creative director for Seventh Avenue, Inc., a Swiss Colony affiliate, used the same concept and, with help from students at Monroe's Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy, created a unique and colorful cover for the company's Seventh Avenue fall catalog.

Wilson's inspiration came from helping his own children while they were creating artwork. "As our kids got older, I would color with them," Wilson said, "and I saw the power of expression in their work." He took his idea for a catalog cover to the president of Seventh Avenue, Gary Schwager, to get the go-ahead, and then contacted Abe Lincoln Principal Tina Van Meer.

Van Meer offered the project to all the students at her school, from 4K through fifth grade. They responded with an outpouring of sunny artwork, eight pieces of which were chosen for the cover. The students who created the featured artwork are Zach Brown, Brady R. Buol, Trinity Elmer, Mariah J. Erickson, Nickolas Fenn, Jessica Gruenberg, Grace Keith and Hayley Rielly. The young artists can take pride in knowing that their artwork will be seen by almost 2 million Seventh Avenue shoppers across the country.
