A special donation for Special Olympics

MONROE - Green County Special Olympics recently received a $500 donation from the Courthaus Quilters Guild from proceeds of this year's quilt show due to the efforts of one of their athletes volunteering with the Guild. Michael Trapp, a Special Olympics athlete for over 20 years, has been a frequent helper at the Guild's bi-annual quilt shows, which were started in 2001. Trapp participates in bowling, basketball skills and track and field with the Green County Special Olympics athletes.

Twenty-nine Green County athletes participated in the 2008-2009 sports season. Due to Trapp's efforts, additional money is available for the upcoming 2009-2010 sport season. Those receiving awards for bowling during the past year at area and regional competitions (listed by name, area placement and regional placement) are: Anita Bonjour, third, third; Waylon Buehl, second, second; Bobbie Jo Canon, fifth (area only); Cody Canon, third, third; Kenneth Canon, fifth (area); Shawnna Eisenhuth, fourth (area); William Flisram, third, third; Kaitlyn Jaeggi, seventh (area); Melissa Johnson, fifth; Melody Judkins, second, second; Deborah Karls, third, third; John Kundert, second, second; Kerrie Lambert, fourth (area); Arnold Lancaster, fourth (area); Samantha Larson, sixth (area); Ashley Martin, fourth (area); Deanna Matula, fifth (area); Lisa Moore, first, first; Jeffery Nafzger, first, first; Tony Petit, fourth (area); Stephen Reynolds, first, first; Zachary Reynolds, seventh (area); Gene Rood II, seventh (area); Mike Scheidegger, fifth (area); Brian Smith, third, third; Merry Sommers, sixth (area); Michael Trapp, fifth (area); Nathan Wilbur, sixth (area); Steven Williams, seventh (area).

Eleven athletes qualified for state bowling competition, but due to inclement weather, only Stephen Reynolds was able to attend. He received a second place. All the athletes are looking forward to bowling in the fall.

Fourteen athletes participated in area track and field competition receiving many first, second and third placement ribbons qualifying them to go on to state competition. Four athletes competed in state. They are: Anita Bonjour, fifth in standing long jump, seventh in softball throw; Melody Judkins, seventh in softball throw; Arnold Lancaster, second in shot put, third in 400 meter run and fourth in 200 meter run; and Lisa Moore, eighth in shot put.

At state competitions, athletes receive gold medals for first place, silver medals for second place and bronze medals for third place.
