MONROE - The Green County Council of the Wisconsin Department of the American Legion honored five citizens with awards for work they have done for their post year in 2011-12. Award winners were Tim Olson, Harry Barger, Randy Klein, Stan Erlandson and Rep. Janis Ringhand, 80th Assembly District.

The Brooklyn/Oregon Benjamin Johnson Post 160 nominated Olson, a retired Oregon firefighter, and Barger, Brooklyn police chief.

The Brodhead Swann-Gehr Post 197 nominated Klein, an emergency medical technician with the Brodhead EMS, and Erlandson, who received the Joseph R. Meeks Gung-Ho award.Ringhand was nominated as legislator of the year by the Green County Council for her support of veterans issues.

This past year, Olson retired from the Oregon Fire Department. He joined the department in 1980 and held positions in various departments. He continues to teach recruits at Madison Area Technical College and serves on the Madison Fire Department as a volunteer.

Barger has been Brooklyn's police chief for three years. He was nominated for improving police coverage and upgrading the police department's record system within the village. He served as a commander of the emergency operations center at the state Capitol during recent political demonstrations. Barger is also active with the Dane and Green County law enforcement networks.

Klein has been certified as an EMT for 20 years. He joined the Brodhead Area EMS service shortly after its formation. He has progressed from ambulance driver to a member of the board. Klein works with disabled adults at a Madison area rehabilitation center.

Erlandson, member of the Brodhead Swann-Gehr Post 197, has worked with many American Legion programs promoting Americanism among the youth of Brodhead, Green County and the Third District.

Ringhand was elected to the assembly in 2010. She has been active in veterans and military affairs and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

In addition to the community high honors, Olson, Barger and Ringhand have been selected by the Third District American Legion to compete for the same awards at the state level. The awards at the state level will be announced at the American Legion Department Convention on Saturday, July 21 in Middleton.
