NEW GLARUS - Middle-school students in Green County will have the chance to build their own bridges, create rockets, and learn team building and communication skills at a unique summer camp that exposes youth to exciting careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The 4-H Gateway Academy is a co-ed day camp opportunity that provides fun and challenging projects using curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a non-profit organization that provides hands-on, project and problem-based curriculums.

Two opportunities are available to students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades this fall to participate in the 4-H Gateway Academy's held at New Glarus Schools. Session I will be held July 20-30 from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and Session II will be held August 3-13 also from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Academy teachers include Dustin Lehman, Rebekah Marchilena and Beth Tadlock from the New Glarus Schools with support of the Green County 4-H Program. Youth do not have to be a current 4-H member to participate.

4-H Gateway Academies are a joint program of the SME Education Foundation, PLTW and the UW-Extension 4-H S.E.T work team to respond to the need for skilled manufacturing workers - a national challenge that is projected to intensify because fewer young people are pursuing engineering-related careers during an era when more engineers are retiring.

4-H Gateway Academy engages young people in leading-edge technologies such as robotics, aeronautics and biochemistry, giving them a glimpse of what a career in these industries would be like while they brainstorm ideas, solve problems and build bridges, race cars and experience with other working models.
