MONROE - On July 1st, the 40th annual Green County Land Judging Contest was held for area 4-H clubs. York 4-H club brought nine 4-H youth to participate in this year's event.
Participants evaluated four plots of soil, judging different characteristics to determine the land's capabilities. Texture, structure, drainage, soil test reports, erosion potential, and depth of topsoil and subsoil were some of the soil qualities that were observed. Participants also had to determine the conservation practices and cropping systems that would be applied if the land were used for agricultural practices.
The York 4-H Junior Team 1 consisted of Trevor Gilson, Travis Gilson and Jacob Tollakson, York 4-H Junior team #2 consisted of Rachel Gilson, Jeremiah Tollakson and Jerrod Judd. York 4-H Senior team included Harley Demler, Chelsy Gilson and Brock Reeson. Harley Demler was the high individual for the Senior Team and Travis Gilson was the high individual for the junior team. Earning the Newell B. Smith Award for the fifth straight year was Chelsy Gilson. This award is given to the 4-H member who is able to judge a pit on the qualities it has for recreational use. The York 4-H land judging teams were coached by Dennis and Tammy Gilson and Julie Mosley.
Green County 4-H would like to thank Todd Jenson and his crew at the Green County Land Conservation office for putting on this great educational event.
The teams look forward to judging at the state contest which is set for July 15 at the WI Farm Technology Days event in Greenleaf.
