MONROE - There is still time to register for the Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin's 15th annual Green County Alzheimer's Walk Sept. 10 at Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St., Monroe.

Participants may register online at http://support.alzwisc.org/green or call 608-232-3400 or 888-308-6251 toll-free for more information. Registration on the day of the walk will be at 7:30 a.m. at the senior center, with the walk starting at 8:30 a.m.

The annual Alzheimer's Walk provides the community with an opportunity to raise awareness, reduce stigma and provide hope for individuals and families living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. The walk also is a way to foster a community where people with dementia can feel accepted and remain active and engaged in the community.

Research shows that people who are regularly engaged in social interaction maintain their brain vitality better than those who are not. People in different phases of Alzheimer's will have different abilities, so what that social engagement looks like will be different, but may include travel, joining groups to play cards or dance, and being involved in community activities or causes.

Walkers can make a difference in the lives of local families facing a dementia diagnosis: Participation in the walk raises funds to support ADAW's programs, like Crossing Bridges, an educational discussion group for people with mild memory impairment and their families. All funds raised stay in Wisconsin.

Dr. Gaines Richardson, palliative medicine and hospice medical director at Monroe Clinic, is this year's medical chair for the Alzheimer's Walk. James Wilson, administrator at Monroe Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation, will be this year's corporate chair. Monroe Manor has had the largest team in each of the last two years.

Sponsors of this year's walk are Gold Sponsors Colony Brands Inc. and Mini's Team; Silver Sponsors Babler Associates, First National Bank and Trust Company and Monroe Clinic; and Bronze Sponsor Klondike Cheese Company.
