The hallways are buzzing again. After a summer of quiet buildings and long days of preparation, schools across our community opened their doors last week to welcome students for the start of a new academic year. From the youngest 4K students clutching backpacks nearly bigger than themselves, to seniors preparing for their final first day, the return to school is always a moment filled with energy, possibility, and hope.
This year feels especially exciting. As interim superintendent, I made it a priority to be present in every one of our schools during those first days so I could monitor student drop-offs, check in with staff, and most importantly, connect with students. Walking into each building, I was struck by the incredible energy in our classrooms and hallways. Smiling students, welcoming teachers, and supportive staff created an atmosphere that can only be described as electric. Monroe’s schools are truly something special, and the excitement surrounding this school year is a powerful reminder of why we are so proud of our district.
That excitement is fueled by the extraordinary dedication of our staff. Our teachers, therapists, support staff, food service team, custodial staff, and administrators give tirelessly of their time and talents, often volunteering long hours to improve instruction, enhance programs, and create opportunities for students. In those first days, I saw teachers giving out smiles, high-fives, and hugs, while sharing stories from their summers as if no time had passed at all. That sense of care and connection is what makes our schools feel like family. Whether it’s planning lessons late into the evening, preparing healthy meals, providing essential support services, or ensuring our buildings shine, their work ensures every student has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
When I met with the entire staff last week, I shared with them that one word seems to characterize the feeling in the District: momentum. Over the past year, our schools have achieved outstanding results. From impressive school report cards to excellent academic performance, from measurable individual student growth to the overwhelming community support we continue to see at events and activities, the School District of Monroe is moving forward with purpose and pride. These accomplishments are a direct reflection of the dedication of our staff, the hard work of our students, and the unwavering commitment of our families and community.
We know, however, that success is not a finish line — it is a foundation. With momentum comes responsibility. As a district, we are committed to building on these achievements and continuing to raise the bar. We will do this by supporting strong instruction, focusing on student growth, and partnering closely with families and the broader community. Together, we will ensure that Monroe not only remains a district to be proud of but also becomes one of the very best school districts in Wisconsin
The start of the school year is always a time of joy and renewal, but this year it also brings a sense of promise. The School District of Monroe is energized, united, and ready for the journey ahead. With the support of our community and the dedication of our incredible staff, the future is bright for our students, and we are just getting started!
