How can it already be August? With so much of life cancelled last year, you need to get out there and make up for lost time. Here’s an assortment of fun stuff for your calendar this month.
Whether you’re rolling in on an antique tractor or floating in on a pontoon, there are so many ways to enjoy Brodhead’s Covered Bridge Days on August 13-15. The schedule is packed full of things to see, do, and eat. Stroll through Veteran’s Park on Saturday and check out the artisan offerings at the Wildflower Art Festival. See old time tractors and antique equipment in action at the Thresheree on Saturday and Sunday. Visit the new Kelch Aviation Museum, and plan ahead to book a bi-plane tour from the airport with Gypsy Air Tours. There’s big name entertainment with the band Madison County on Saturday, and a Chicken BBQ too. For more info go to brodheadchamber.com.
Beef: it’s what’s for dinner on August 19. The Green County Beef Producers are back with their Steak Fry at the Green County Fairgrounds. In addition to a ribeye grilled to your liking, the menu includes corn on the cob and baby red potatoes. The winner of the 2021 “Best Burger in Green County” contest will be announced that night.
Grab your lawn chairs and get ready for a big day of fun at Main Street Monroe’s Concert on the Square on August 21. Main Street is switching things up a bit for this one. The show is on a Saturday, it starts earlier in the day, and it’s moving to the north side of the downtown Square. Here’s the schedule so far: Comedy Juggling Show for kids at 2:30 p.m. (west side stage), Doo Wop Daddies plays on the main stage (in the Courthouse parking lot) at 3 p.m., Bubble Making for kids at 4 p.m. (on the west side lawn), and Dancing Queen is on the main stage at 6:30 p.m. Also happening: Ag Trivia and prizes with the Green County Dairy Queens, Master’s Grilled Cheese sandwiches available from the National Historic Cheesemaking Center food stand (served by the Boy Scouts), and squeaky fresh cheese curds for sale. There will be more, but it’s just not finalized yet.
Albany’s Community Picnic takes the prize for a throwback to fun and fellowship. It’s a new event being hosted for Albany Community 1st, and features old-time games for kids of all ages like Watermelon Seed Spitting and Sack Races. There’s no cake walk on the schedule, but “candy raffle” sounds intriguing. The party starts in Legion Park at noon on August 22.
Green County’s Antique Farm Heritage Club is hosting their annual show at KK Lawn and Sport on County Road DR, Monroe, on August 28-29. This year the featured brands are Farmall, IH, and Case but antique tractors of all kinds are welcome to participate. For more information contact Andrew at 608.558.4224.
When it comes to Wisconsin being famous as America’s Dairyland, Green County ranks second to none. Pop in to Monroe Arts Center this month to check out an exhibit celebrating the beauty of our local livestock and landscape. Artist Pamela Ruschman’s rural roots provide the inspiration for her work. From “Vincent Van Goat” to “Betty Buffalo” to the four-pack flock of roosters she’s dubbed “The Fantastic Four,” Ruschman’s paintings are guaranteed to make you smile. The exhibit continues now through August 27.
— Noreen Rueckert is director for Green County Tourism and Green County Cheese Days, and helps out with Main Street Monroe’s Concerts on the Square. Her favorite cheese is rumored to be Feta. She has the best office in the county — overlooking Monroe’s Square from the tower of the Historic Green County Courthouse. She dabbles in photography and graphic design, adores cats and iced coffee, and secretly loves the Cheese Days Song.
