Otte: What’s New at GCDC?

It’s been a busy and exciting start to 2025 here at the Green County Development Corporation, and I wanted to take a moment to share some of the highlights. Whether you’re a business owner, a community leader, or just someone who cares about where Green County is headed, there’s a lot going on — and a lot to be proud of.

Workforce and Youth Development

One of the things I’m most excited about right now is the progress on the technical education wing at the new Monroe High School. We were so excited to partner with the Monroe School District to receive a $2 million grant to bring this vision to life. The new center will give students hands-on training in construction, welding, and automotive work — fields we know are in high demand right here in our communities.

This isn’t just a school project. It’s a long-term investment in our workforce — and in our kids. It’s one of the most meaningful projects I’ve been part of during my time at GCDC.

At the same time, students are wrapping up the second year of our Home Construction Cooperative. These students have worked hard this past year building a house from the ground up on land donated to GCDC by the City of Monroe. We’ll be celebrating their work with an Open House on Tuesday, May 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 1511 16th Ave in Monroe. All are welcome to stop by and see what these students have accomplished.

Housing

Housing continues to be one of our top priorities. Last month, we launched the Housing Development Fund, a new tool to help address the growing need for workforce housing across Green County. This fund came together through the support of several key partners, including the Colony Brands Foundation, along with local banks and businesses that understand how critical housing is to economic growth.

The fund now totals $2.8 million, and we’ve already started reviewing applications from developers looking to build in our area. A committee helps guide where the dollars go, ensuring we’re investing in projects that make sense and meet real needs in our communities.

Tech Connect

Access to technology is no longer optional — it’s essential for education, employment, and daily life. That’s why GCDC, in partnership with the Green County IT Department, launched Tech Connect — an initiative focused on improving digital access for residents across the county.

Through this program, we’re collecting, refurbishing, and distributing laptops to individuals who may not otherwise have access to a reliable device. This includes students, veterans, and low-to-moderate income households. By equipping more residents with the tools they need to stay connected, we’re helping remove barriers to opportunity.

Digital equity is essential for a strong workforce. Whether it’s applying for a job, attending a virtual training, or completing schoolwork, having access to a working computer is a baseline requirement in today’s economy. Tech Connect is a practical step toward closing that gap — and strengthening our talent pipeline at the same time.

Looking Ahead — Supporting Entrepreneurs and Small Business Growth

One of the things I’m most excited about right now is a new opportunity to support local entrepreneurs and small businesses. GCDC was recently awarded $60,000 through WEDC’s Small Business Development Grant Program — one of only 19 organizations across the state to receive these funds.

We’re putting the funding to work through two new efforts under our Elevate Entrepreneurs umbrella. First, we’re launching Student Start-Up, a program for young adults ages 18-22 that will offer workshops, mentorship, and small-scale funding to help them explore and develop their business ideas. This program will roll out later this summer.

Second, we’re introducing a brand-new Microloan Program beginning in May. These 0% interest loans of up to $10,000 are designed to support small business start-ups and expansions. The goal is to provide flexible, early-stage financing that helps our small business community grow and succeed.

In addition to those two efforts, we’re also kicking off our Elevate Entrepreneurs Pitch Series on May 1 at Bailey’s Run in New Glarus. It’s open to anyone — whether you’re just starting out with a business idea or already operating an existing business. Participants will get the chance to pitch in a supportive setting, receive feedback, and compete for cash prizes to move their ideas forward.

At GCDC, our focus is simple: support the people, projects, and partnerships that move Green County forward. Whether it’s housing, workforce, small business, or digital access — we’re here to build momentum and make things happen. If you’ve got an idea, a question, or just want to learn more, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always ready to connect.
