Lombardo: Staying ready for spring storms

March brings the first real signs of spring to Green County, including longer days, warmer afternoons, and the welcome feeling that winter is finally loosening its grip. However, as the snow melts and the ground softens, this season also marks the beginning of spring storms and flooding risks across Wisconsin. As these seasonal risks return, it’s a reminder that staying safe during spring storms doesn’t happen by accident; it depends on year‑round emergency preparedness work happening across Green County.

Public health emergency preparedness focuses on being ready long before a crisis hits so we can protect the health and safety of our community. This behind‑the‑scenes work includes coordinating with Green County Emergency Management, Green County Human Services, and many other local partners to ensure we can respond quickly when severe weather or other emergencies arise.

This year, Wisconsin’s Flood Safety Awareness Week serves as an important reminder that staying informed is the best way to stay safe. Weather conditions can change quickly in spring, and early warnings save lives. Keeping up with local forecasts or having a weather radio on hand are simple steps that help families stay ahead of severe weather. Residents can also sign up for Nixle alerts, which send local emergency notifications directly to mobile devices. These alerts provide real‑time updates about flooding, severe storms, and other urgent situations.

There are also practical steps you can take to be better prepared, such as checking sump pumps, clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, and keeping an emergency kit in your car. For people who rely on medical devices that need electricity, planning ahead for potential power outages is especially important.

As we welcome the warmer days ahead, this season is a reminder to stay ready. Spring storms are a part of life in Wisconsin, but with preparation and awareness, our community can stay healthy and safe. March is the perfect opportunity for every household to take a few minutes to review their plans, update emergency supplies, and make sure they’re ready for whatever spring brings.
