Tell drama just gets better

I was impressed by the performance this year of the William Tell Drama in New Glarus on Labor Day weekend. Actually it was not the first time. My family was there at the 1938 performance when it all started. Of course, we kids were more interested in climbing the rocks above the seating area, but we knew something exciting had happened when the boy came running back to his dad holding up the apple with the arrow shot right through the center! Year after year, I have watched the productions become better and better. This year's performance on Sunday, the English and German casts merged together, was the finest I've ever seen. Whether performed in German or English, the story of William Tell is a symbol of the fight for freedom and liberty and reminds us that those are American values. Once a year, our friends and neighbors of New Glarus bing to life an ancient world, unlike the constantly changing world of today, but life that existed unchanged over many generations, rooted in tradition and love for their land. Whether you are Swiss or not, plan to spend an afternoon on Labor Day weekend in the beautiful valley near New Glarus to see this amazing production. One man remarked after the play on Sunday, "I live 40 miles away and come every few years. It always grabs me."
