There they go again. Legislators in Madison plan to steal over $200 million of the money we pay for roads to increase state spending on unrelated programs in the pending state budget.
Not content with just raiding cash from the transportation fund, legislators plan to replace the cash with more borrowing that will add to our transportation fund debt. We'll pay almost $5 million in interest on the additional debt in just the next two years.
Using debt for our roads has risen dramatically in the past six years to the point where only 88 cents of every dollar we pay in gas tax and other transportation fees helps build and fix our roads. The other 12 cents just pays the debt on past road projects. I cannot support this latest plan which a friend of mine calls a "Stick it to the Next Generation" transportation plan.
I'm co-sponsoring an amendment to our state constitution to stop any governor or legislature from the bad practice of raiding special purpose state funds for unrelated and unsustainable spending. Our state government simply must start living within its means.
