Monroe Main Street

"A Square Affair" held on May 22 was a wonderful event dedicating the new look and feel of the downtown. My deep appreciation to Pam Christopher and the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry for hosting this event, as well as to the team of Main Street, Chamber and GCHS volunteers that coordinated and worked the event. Pam, Tracy Hamilton, Tom Miller and Maria Anderson in particular put in a great deal of time and energy to pave the way for this very special Streetscape dedication. I would also like to recognize the members of Crossroads Community Church for providing our youth with special activities and Green County for opening the Courthouse for public touring. Community sponsors included Fehr-Graham and Associates, Glanbia Nutritionals, E & N Hughes and Radio Shack. And, the weather could not have been better.

With the final touches complete on the Square, thanks to the Monroe Women's Club work planting the new pots, it's time to fully enjoy the new downtown this summer.

Market on the Square is flourishing on the north side; open Wednesdays from 2 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are tasty treats and an array of flowers and plants to be found at this season's market in addition to the locally grown fresh produce and great conversations with the growers.

Concerts on the Square begin Thursday, June 10 with our favorite rock American performer, Beth Kille. The Sparetime Bluegrass Band is on deck for Thursday, June 24. Concerts are held on the north side of the Square from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (or at Monroe Middle School or Turner Hall if the weather demands). Bring a folding chair, a picnic or box lunch and enjoy the entertainment, which is being supported this year by Monroe Clinic, Reffue, Pas, Jacobson and Koster LLP and Duxstad and Bestul S.C.. Thank you!

A new edition to our downtown summer calendar is "Cars on the Square." Drive-ins for classic auto enthusiasts will be held Friday, June 11 and Friday, Aug. 20. Tom Smith has been a great partner to work with in organizing this new event. The inner lanes of 17th Avenue and 10th Street will provide the staging area from 5 to 8:30 p.m. for the cruises. For more information you may contact Tom at (608) 293-0172 or me at Main Street (608) 328-4023.

The last "event" downtown in June is intended to show support for the great efforts of the Relay for Life organizers and participants. Starting on June 21, the week of Relay, purple will prevail in the downtown, as businesses express their support with the color purple in the manner best suited to their individual business. I invite you to come stroll the Square from June 21-27 to enjoy the creativity of the businesses that comprise the heart of Monroe.
