To the editor:

Hi, my name is Beth Schmidt, and I'm a candidate for the 45th Assembly District. I am a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. My husband Karl and I have lived in Orfordville for 27 years, where I currently serve as a trustee on the Village Board. I have an Associate Degree in Accounting and worked as a general accountant for five years. For the last 15 years, I have worked as a server at Applebee's. It has given me the flexibility to raise my family and volunteer for my community, and given me the interaction with people that energizes me. Now that we have raised our family, I am ready to take the next step in serving my community. The 45th Assembly District is ideal for me to represent because it now includes the cities and towns I know so well. I want to go to Madison to do something, not to be something, and my top priority is to bring jobs to our community.

I have seen the effects of this bad economy. There are far too many of us unemployed or underemployed. We have businesses that want to grow, and we have people that want to work. One way we can help is to support education in the skilled trades. There is a great need for these good paying jobs right now. We also need to reduce restrictive and overly broad rules and regulations that stifle job creation. No one understands the needs of the 45th better than the people who live and work here, so I want to restore control to our local governments.

I am not a career politician but a hardworking community member with a fresh perspective. I have a desire for smaller, more affordable government and an ability to make common sense decisions, no matter how difficult. I also know firsthand the struggles of the average family and I understand the diversity within the district, from the cities to the farm communities. I am not working to get endorsements from special interest groups. My number one goal is to get the endorsement of you, the people of the 45th District, and I humbly ask for your vote on Nov. 6.
