To the editor:

I had the opportunity to meet Rick Santorum when he visited Rochester, Minn. in February. I asked him a question about Medicare reform, since many of my senior patients are having a hard time finding a local doctor who accepts Medicare patients. He gave a complete answer that outlined the current problems affecting Medicare and the defects of Obamacare. He then described his plans for patient-centered health care reform and his support of the latest Paul Ryan budget. Sen. Santorum stressed the urgent need for entitlement reform.

My impressions of the senator were:

1. He is brilliant with an ability to explain complex issues to the voters.

2. He has complete command of policy both domestic and foreign.

3. He is a trustworthy leader who does not dodge tough problems.

This presidential election will be about big ideas and big reforms. Our social insurance programs are going bankrupt. The Medicare hospital insurance fund will be completely out of money in 12 years. The only presidential candidate with hands-on experience in reforming a federal entitlement program is Sen. Santorum. He was a major author of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act.

Mitt Romney had a chance to reform health care in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, he failed. Non-urgent visits to the emergency room have gone up 4 percent. Patients are now waiting on average more than 40 days and 40 nights to see a doctor. Premiums for health insurance in Massachusetts are the highest in the nation.

I'm asking my friends and family in Wisconsin to please vote for Rick Santorum on Tuesday, April 3. We need a statesman for president who has experience reforming government.
