Rueckert: Summer fun on the horizon

It is with thoughts of outdoor concerts and images of deep-fried cheese curds dancing in my head that I bring you this month's Green County Tourism update. Despite the current weather forecast, we're ready for festivals and summer fun. Here are some of the ways we're reaching out to attract visitors to join in.

The new 2018 Green County Visitor and Activity Guide is packed full of ideas for outdoor recreation, dining and events in every community. Fifty-thousand copies are distributed, including those mailed to travelers by request and stocked at various locations both in and out of the county. One of the more unique locations is the Lake Express Car Ferry that offers a shortcut across the lake from Muskegon, Michigan, to Milwaukee.

The "Discover Wisconsin" film crew will be here this summer capturing footage at various locations for an "eat - drink - yodel" themed show focusing on Green County's cheese, beer and the Swiss heritage roots that set the stage for who we are today. The episode will air in May 2019.

Green County Tourism will also be filming a new video clip for TV and social media this summer - highlighting outdoor recreation and scenic spots. Locations to be included are New Glarus Woods State Park, Lake Montesian and Montesian Gardens in Monticello, and the Badger State Trail.

Milwaukee's Harley-Davidson celebrates its 115th anniversary this year in August. Why does that matter to Green County? Thousands of visitors from all over the United States will be rolling into Wisconsin, and many of them are looking for side-trips along the way. Our county will be featured on the official Biker Guide 115th map.

Not everyone rides a motorcycle to their destination, but no matter where you go for a getaway, you will eat. In addition to cheese, beer and authentic Swiss cuisine, Green County boasts some outstanding restaurants. Many chefs incorporate local ingredients and aspects of farm-to-table dining in their menus. We're promoting to the foodie traveler through publications including "Edible Milwaukee" and Chicago's "Our Green Plate" magazine. We'll also be working with some food bloggers and travel writers again this year.

Green County Tourism uses a variety of media to reach potential travelers, including print, radio, TV, outdoor, online, and social media. We also take advantage of cost savings through cooperative marketing opportunities with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

In addition to our own marketing, Green County will be in the spotlight this year with a TV spot produced by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. A number of locals donned lederhosen and dirndls to take part as extras in a day-long shooting session at Turner Hall of Monroe, so you'll see some familiar faces. You'll also hear a familiar sound if you've ever been to a performance by the New Glarus Yodel Club. Tony Zgraggen (owner of Alp and Dell Cheese Store in Monroe) leads the spot with an epic yodel bringing authentic Swiss flavor to center stage along with some good old-fashioned Oktoberfest fun. Ein prosit! With Tony on hand for the press conference, the spot debuted at the Wisconsin Governor's Conference on Tourism on Sunday. It will begin airing in May in Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis and across the state of Wisconsin.
