In the midst of a delayed spring rush, farmers (and city folks) have another event they shouldn't miss. Last Saturday night, l attended Monroe Theater Guild's production of "The Drawer Boy" at the MAC (four more performances April 24-27).
Rave reviews from national critics and glamorous awards don't always create an impact in rural America. But, this show about two friends "down on the farm" and the young actor who interrupts their long established routine, grabs your attention and heart. This is more than community theatre; this is a professional performance by three gifted actors and their support staff. This moving portrayal of growing up on the farm was like looking at an old home movie of what happened when gullible city cousins visited my family farm during childhood. It also shows the strengths of farm friendship, where our lives and livelihoods were dependent upon those friendships.
Take it from one who grew up being sent to find board-stretchers and 10/16-inch wrenches, this is a show you shouldn't miss.
