Romney, Thompson have eroded economy

To the editor:

Mitt Romney spent his career buying American companies, shutting them down and shipping jobs overseas. He earned a fortune by putting Americans out of work. One of Bain's companies in Rockford is actually being dismantled and shipped to China as Romney runs for the Presidency.

His remarks to an audience of similar-minded financiers implying that 47 percent of the population are unproductive illustrate his contempt for the average citizen. Meanwhile, the 13 percent that he paid in income taxes while sheltering his wealth in offshore tax havens is a lower portion than the majority of our citizens contribute to the needs of government. Romney's smug self-satisfaction is unjustified.

In the other statewide race, Tommy Thompson made himself wealthy by going through the revolving door and peddling influence to corporations after his years in Washington. One of the companies that paid hundreds of thousands to the consulting firm that hired Thompson was Romney's Bain Capital.

These guys are two of the financial wizards who have lined their pockets by eroding the American economy over the last couple of decades. Anyone who imagines that they will abruptly change their spots and begin operating in the best interest of the American middle class is ignoring their history.
