Cernek: The overturning of Roe v. Wade

June 17, 2022 was a historic day in our nation as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. I have always held to the belief that God would not continue to bless our nation as long as the bloodshed of the unborn was on our hands as a people. In the words of an Executive Director of a Crisis Pregnancy Center: “This is a new beginning for our nation! We have taken a monumental step in protecting life. While we know there is more work than ever before in front of us, let us praise God for the work He has done!”

Peter Zebell at forerunnersofamerica.org reports: “In a majority opinion penned by Justice Alito, the court determined the Roe decision was wrong to conclude the U.S. Constitution protects abortion rights. ‘Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,’ Justice Alito wrote. ‘Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.’

However, not everyone is of the same opinion (as the majority on the Court). U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced: ‘The Justice Department strongly disagrees with the Court’s decision…And we stand ready to work with other arms of the federal government that seeks to use their lawful authorities to protect and preserve access to reproductive care.’ President Biden declared, ‘(T)his decision must not be the final word. This is not over.’

Contrary to popular opinion, the Supreme Court has not outlawed abortion. Instead, it has returned the issue to the states to decide. Now the responsibility rests with each of us to persuade our representatives to vote for legislation that will further the cause of life over death. This legal victory only secured for us an environment where truth has the ability to compete against the lie that a child is not a full human being, created in the image of God.”

If anything, the overturning of Roe v. Wade is just the beginning of the pro-life struggle. Progressives are crying foul. Worse than crying foul, they are vandalizing and threatening. An outfit called Jane’s Revenge put this warning out to crisis pregnancy centers everywhere: “We have demonstrated in the past … how easy and fun it is to attack. We are versatile, we are mercurial, and we answer to no one but ourselves. We promised to take increasingly drastic measures against oppressive infrastructures. (Oppressive structures being those agencies that give away diapers, baby formula, and baby strollers). Rest assured that we will, (take drastic measures) and those measures may not come in the form of something so easily cleaned up as fire and graffiti. From here forward, any anti-choice group who closes their doors, and stops operating will no longer be a target. But until you do, it’s open season, and we know where your operations are.”

Scary stuff. But I will say this: They may not know it, but they do answer to Someone besides themselves. And God will not be silent forever.
