To the editor:
Based on it's reaction to the unimaginable horror of the slaughter in Newtown, it appears that the NRA's solution is that every man, woman and child in America start carrying an assault rifle 24/7... like primitive countries of Afghanistan or Somalia. Is that really the kind of America we want?
The president of that organization claims that more guns equals less gun death - but that's not true.
The TRUTH IS the states with the least number of guns have the lowest number of gun-related deaths. The TRUTH is, there was an armed security guard in the Columbine school - and it didn't stop the massacre that took place there. The TRUTH IS, the guns Adam Lanza's mother bought for her own "protection" didn't protect her - they killed her - and 20 beautiful little children, and six adults. The TRUTH IS, statistics show that in households with guns, those guns are six times more likely to result in the death of a family member than they are likely to be used to prevent a crime. The TRUTH IS, in cases of domestic violence, homes with guns result in a 15 percent increase in the likelihood that the woman in the home will be killed. The TRUTH IS, if military-style weapons and ammunition clips were banned, no one could kill 30 or more people in less than a minute with a gun. The TRUTH IS, according to the CDC, at their current pace, gun deaths will outnumber deaths from traffic accidents by 2015. The TRUTH IS, reasonable, common sense gun safety restrictions would in NO WAY threaten American's First Amendment rights. The TRUTH IS, 40 percent of gun sales in America never involve ANY kind of background check. The TRUTH IS, President Obama does NOT have an armed militia (a commonly stated fear of the gun culture crowd) that's going to attack American citizens.
The TRUTH IS, if the right to own military-style weapons and ammunition is more important to someone than all the lives of the innocent people they are killing, that person is probably too clinically paranoid, mentally ill, and/or unstable to be qualified to own one.
The TRUTH IS, the NRA's agenda appears to be more directly connected to fact that it now represents the immoral interests of the gun manufacturers and illegal gun sales in America than it does the well being of our society.
