I was rather upset to see a reader comment in "Barbs and Blossoms" in a recent issue of the Monroe Times that essentially blasted the folks at the Monroe City Hall for what I thought was mere, unfounded spite.
Having worked in local government for many, many years and in several municipalities, I am still amazed at the ease with which individuals can criticize without a shred of fact from the comfort of an armchair. These same "taxpayers" clearly have little knowledge of how complex managing the affairs of a municipality, large or small, have become over the years. The range and magnitude of work and the detail needed to carry out daily functions is incredible and weighs greatly upon those who serve in municipal capacities. These folks are hard working, very dedicated and certainly are undeserving of these callous remarks.
I, for one, applaud their efforts and am more than happy, as a property owner, to help cover the costs of bearing so great a responsibility. Wear their shoes for a month or so and you will soon know of what I speak. And next time you vote, get a glass of water, call the fire department or police during an emergency, set out your refuse, or just stroll up a beautiful tree-lined street on a sidewalk, remember that these things don't just happen. They also are a result of a group of taxpaying citizens, as well, that work tirelessly for the good of all of us and our community.
