On automakers and government

Car companies need an overhaul. Some things they brought on themselves, some the government, and some the unions. But rather than let government dictate their fate, why not go after banks that gave out bonuses for "great" work? To close dealerships is a big mistake, because of the jobs that will be lost. After all, the more dealers you have, the more you sell.

Car companies could put a chip in and double gas mileage on any car or truck. If you don't think so, how can we get to the moon? We need American car companies. Detroit used to be the motor capital of the world, now it is Toronto, Canada. Why? Health insurance costs $2,000 more in the U.S.

Chrysler is being bought out by Fiat - which lost a lot of money last year and now will get billions of free taxpayer money. In a few years Fiat could very well be in trouble.

Now the president canceled 77 leases for oil drilling - more jobs lost, and the money would have stayed here.

I will be surprised if we get a good health care plan, because the drug and insurance companies' lobbies are so strong. The V.A. can get a good deal, but the government can't.

Now we hear Social Security is running out of money. There should be nearly $2 trillion in Social Security. President FDR had a Social Security trust fund, but President LBJ needed money for the Vietnam War, so he put it in the general fund. Now nearly all presidents have been robbing the Social Security fund.

One way we could get out of debt is to have the president appoint more people so they pay their taxes. The bottom line is don't expect too much to change, as it is payback time for getting elected. The ones who raised the most money will need to be paid back.

I still believe we live in the best country in the world, but it's going downhill fast. All the taxes collected should be able to balance the budget, if not for gross mismanagement. Now, since January 2009, there are more lobbyists. They want a good hunk of that free money.
