On April 18, I was in Monroe with four of my fellow AMVETS (American Veterans) and the wife of one of them to help some local veterans who would like to start up an AMVETS post in Monroe.
After we finished meeting with the veterans, we stopped at the Chinese buffet restaurant to eat. We were all wearing clothing bearing the AMVETS logo and people came up to us and talked to us and were very friendly. Much to our surprise, the hostess and waiter came over and pointed at a couple who were getting into their car to leave and said that they took care of our bill. None of us knew who the people were, and they obviously did not expect a thank you from us.
Needless to say, we left your city with a very good impression of the people who live in and around Monroe. You have something to be proud of. This story of kindness will be taken back to our homes in Reedsville, Beaver Dam, Milwaukee and New Glarus and shared with many people. AMVETS is open to all veterans who served honorably at any time during war or peace and to active military persons, including National Guard and Reserve members. Interested veterans should come to the VFW hall on at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, for more information.
