Missionary will be missed

I recently read an article by Associated Press Writer Kathy Gannon entitled, "American Missionaries gunned down for preaching Christianity," Aug. 7 2010.

The article stated, "Taliban terrorists declared they shot and killed this team of missionaries for speaking of Christianity."

I read several other sources speaking of the cruel murder of this 10-member medical team by Islamic terrorists. Their team leader was Dr. Tom Little, an optometrist from Del Mar, N.Y., who for well over 30 years served the Afghan people. The team was returning from providing eye treatment and health care to remote mountain villages in Northern Afghanistan. Usually Dr. Little's wife would accompany him, but not this time. Together they raised three children in this country.

Dr. Little ran a factory that employed local Afghan workers who made and donated glasses for thousands of children and others in Kabul and throughout Afghanistan.

You may be wondering why a doctor, who could enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle here in America, would do such difficult, dangerous work. Dr. Tom Little modeled the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who calls His followers to serve Him by serving others, to sacrifice by putting Christ first, others second and ourselves last all with a spirit of joyful gratitude. Tom Little understood Christ's teaching of compassion and mercy and showed a world in turmoil what this message looks like in 2010.

Thank you Dr. Little for serving your Savior by serving the Afghan people for all these years. Most certainly they will miss you and your work on their behalf.
