MAC issues apology for accessibility problems

From Richard Daniels

Executive Director, Monroe Arts Center

This letter is an apology to Lisa Cihlar, whose letter you printed this past Saturday. Ms. Cihlar rightfully complained about the inaccessibility of the concert hall at the Monroe Arts Center, which is located in the historic Methodist Church at 1315 11th St. She wanted to attend David Rhodes's presentation this Thursday, May 19. Rhodes, a writer, has been in a wheelchair for over 30 years. He has generously consented to be carried.

The church building that houses the Arts Center is on the National Register of Historic Places and any changes to the building must be approved by the Wisconsin Historical Society. We have approval to build an addition with an elevator and link it to the church building and we have been engaged in fundraising for this project for over three years.

We have made great progress amid setbacks, but we are determined to make this building accessible.

I apologized to David Rhodes, and I apologize to Lisa Cihlar.
