To the editor:
Education should be the top priority of the state. But they cut state aid to public schools by the largest amount in the history of the state. Instead they increased taxpayer money given to private schools in Milwaukee.
Now many schools have fewer teachers, larger class sizes or higher property tax or referendums to keep operating.
Previous generations paid for their schools but now they are short-changing today's students when they approved Walker's tax giveaways to corporations.
Even though the government accountability board said there are only about 12 to 20 cases of voter fraud in any year, Republicans claimed there was widespread voter fraud. They enacted a Voter Suppression Bill. A judge threw it out. It shouldn't be casting people to vote. How many adults have their birth certificate lying around their house. It is shameful that here and in many other states Republicans are trying to make it harder to vote.
Sworn to secrecy, they hired lawyers to do redistricting. Now Green County that has been in the 80th district for years is now split among three districts. In Milwaukee the gerrymandering was so bad the attorney general lost the court case and the taxpayers also have to pay the plaintiff's lawyers $185,500. By then the total cost had reached $1.5 million then this year Fitzgerald had $31,000 paid to the lawyers that drew up the maps. This huge expense for taxpayers proves how inept they are. Vote them out.
