Literacy Council a rewarding option for volunteers

As residents of Green County, we have a variety of volunteer opportunities available for our consideration. One of the most rewarding experiences I have had has been as a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council of Green County. The mission of the Literacy Council is to instruct adult learners in the reading, writing and speaking of English. The training is excellent and does not involve a huge commitment of time. My tutoring experience has been with a senior citizen who needed basic reading instruction. Working with that student to accomplish the goals we set and seeing the progress that we were able to make by working together was an amazing experience!

I also have the pleasure of serving on the Literacy Council board of directors. It is a hard-working volunteer board that has seen a steadily increasing need for the services offered. This board truly is dedicated to promoting the council's mission. Funding for the Literacy Council relies entirely on donations from private citizens and organizations. With a relatively small budget, we are able to make a big difference in the quality of life for many residents of Green County.

As we move into the holiday season, some of us consider making donations to organizations that make a difference locally. The Literacy Council of Green County would welcome monetary donations in any amount. If you are able and willing to donate time as a volunteer tutor, we encourage you to contact us at The Literacy Council of Green County, 925 16th Ave., Monroe WI 53566; telephone: (608) 328-7010. If serving on the board is more to your taste, we will be looking to fill vacancies left by outgoing board members in January and would love to hear from you. Contact me at (608) 527-5146 for more information about board membership.

The Literacy Council of Green County has been blessed with generous community and volunteer support. As the need for our services continues to grow, we look forward to maintaining a quality program that serves and benefits the entire county.
