Lisa Lamkins: All Wisconsinites deserve role in economic stimulus
Placeholder Image
In our enthusiasm to enact a much-needed economic stimulus package, let's not leave out millions of those who need it most and who would give the economy an immediate shot in the arm.

Congress is considering two versions of a plan to stimulate the economy, but only one version - the Senate's - offers rebates to the approximately 20 million Americans who live primarily on Social Security.

Older Americans on fixed incomes are among the hardest hit by an economic downturn. According to analysis by AARP's Public Policy Institute, approximately 687,832 Wisconsin residents age 65 and over would be eligible for stimulus assistance under the Senate plan. AARP also reports that these older Americans spend 92 percent of their income - a greater proportionate share of income than all other adults.

The Senate stimulus package is a fair and effective plan that would put money into the hands of people who will more quickly put the money back into the economy and help out those who need it most.

On behalf of its more than 39 million members, AARP wholeheartedly endorses the Senate's Economic Stimulus Act, which is expected to be voted on by the full Senate this week. Please urge Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold to vote in favor of this much-needed measure. To make your voice heard by our senators, call toll-free (800) 580-5739.
