To the Editor:
Residents of Monroe School District: please attend the Meeting of Electors on Monday, July 17th at 6:30 p.m., at the Monroe High School and consider voting “Yes”. All eligible voters within the district have a vote.
I encourage everyone to read the newsletter recently sent out by the school district. If you did not receive one, you can find a digital copy on the district website. The referendum process has been ongoing for 5 years and the School District of Monroe is working closely with CG Schmidt, a reputable construction company, with experience building many schools throughout Wisconsin and several buildings in the Monroe community. The referendum has already passed, this vote will not have a direct impact on your property tax bill.
The meeting of electors will address one question: Will we allow the school district to pursue the purchase of the B&S property (on the east side of Monroe) with the intention of building a new high school on this property? I believe the B&S proposal is the best for our community, it provides a mutually beneficial opportunity for the school district and the current property owners and allows the potential for residential growth within the City of Monroe. Saying “Yes” to B&S allows the district the opportunity to explore building a new school on the B&S property, the purchase contract has many contingencies that will need to be met prior to the purchase being finalized. Saying “Yes” will give the district and CG Schmidt the ability to test the land, evaluate traffic patterns and thoroughly investigate any other concerns that may arise.
The direct cost to taxpayers will be the same whether you vote yes or no. The referendum has passed, the tax increase has been established and a new school will be built with those funds. In my opinion, the lost revenue for other community organizations who rent the school to host many events throughout the year in addition to the many school district sports, clubs and programs is enough to say “Yes” to B&S.
During the meeting childcare will be available. There will be accommodations for people with mobility concerns.
