Wellington: Keep Wisconsin great — vote for Susan Crawford
Letter To The Editor

From Charles Wellington

Monroe

To the Editor:

Donald Trump reserved the motto “Make America Great Again” during his first presidential run. One can debate whether he even came close to fulfilling that promise in his first term or, for that matter, whether America had lost its stature in the first place. I think not. In the first weeks of his second term, however, many Americans agree that he has taken this country to new lows. Where we end up is hard to say, but he has certainly made a lot of enemies. Tanking USAID, giving an unelected billionaire access to the Treasury and everything that goes with it, loading his cabinet with mostly unqualified people, all of whom appear to be more loyal to him than the country defies what America has stood for during most of its history.

I could go on, but my purpose in writing is to discuss the extremely important election coming up in April for our Supreme Court. Judge Susan Crawford is a smart, fair and gifted jurist. Her record on the bench as well as the many people and organizations who are endorsing her bears this out. She deserves to sit on the high court.

In contrast, Brad Schimel was appointed by Scott Walker as Attorney General and proved to be a disaster. As a result he lost his bid to be reelected — after which loss he was rewarded again when Walker appointed him to the bench. As Attorney General, he fought against health care, supported a total ban on abortion with no exception for rape or incest, wasted millions of taxpayer money on extreme right wing causes, and bragged about his efforts to suppress voting in 2016. Since then, he has sympathized with the January 6 insurrectionists and questioned the decision of the juries who found them guilty. This from a judge who has pledged to uphold the law. He does not belong on our highest court. He is a political operative, not a fair-minded jurist.

Elon Musk is now said to be throwing his weight and money into the contest on behalf of Schimel. Given his millions spent on Trump in 2024, he seems to feel that he is the kingmaker of choice for those who share his extreme and often vile views. This should frighten any Wisconsin citizen concerned about the State’s future.

Vote for Susan Crawford and “Keep Wisconsin Great.”
