To the Editor:

On February 17 the American people were once again subjected to the inconvenience of the Post Office, Banks, most other government offices and various other businesses being closed. This time it was for the Holiday called “President’s Day”.

Quite often the person whom a party nominates for president is a political hack whose only qualification is having done well in the early voting States of Iowa and New Hampshire and on Super Tuesday. Ridiculous slogans and impossible promises are what carry the day in those States. Since both parties nominate a political hack, we end up with a political hack in the White House. If anyone doubts that, just look at the candidates that the two parties came up with in the last three presidential elections. Each of those elections, both parties were scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Those being honored on President’s Day include such shining lights as Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Warren Harding, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden. It is an insult to us citizens to inconvenience us once a year in honor of a group that includes that motley crew. 

Federal employees now get ten paid holidays per year in addition to their regular vacation time. That is outrageous.

The DOGE committee under the direction of Elon Musk is working to cut the costs of government and make it more efficient. A good place for them to start would be with the elimination of President’s Day as a national Holiday. The next thing after that would be the elimination of Juneteenth which has only been a Holiday since 2021 when Biden signed it into law. When he signed the law in early 2021, Biden said that it was the most significant thing that he had done as president. I have to agree with that, since he never did much of anything else after that.
