Vernon: Yes to schools, props to dedicated public servants
letter to the editor stock

From George Vernon

Jordan Township

To the Editor:

As a member of the Monroe community, I am writing to express my support for increased funding for the Monroe School District and to encourage our community to carefully consider the long-term value of investing in our local schools.

About 30 years ago my wife and I bought an old, tired retired dairy farm in Jordan Township. We were living in Chicago at the time. A couple years later, when freshman year loomed for our daughter, we paid a visit to Monroe High School just out of curiosity. As we drove back home from that visit we agreed, “We’re moving to Monroe.”  The house was kind of falling down but we made the most of it and lived through the renovations. Our daughter had a truly wonderful Monroe High School experience. She has since returned to Monroe where she is raising HER kids to become Cheesemakers. We have built a wonderful life here and never looked back.

Strong public schools are one of the most important foundations of a thriving community. This decision ultimately reflects what kind of community we want to be. I realize no vote will ever have 100% approval but please consider the long-term effects of a great school system for the entire community, not just parents and kids. By supporting our schools, we are choosing to invest in our children, our workforce, and the long-term strength of Monroe itself. Please join me in supporting Monroe Schools by voting YES on April 7. My hope is for families similar to ours will have the same story to share for years to come.

Also, I endorse the recent letter from Claudia Looze of Highland about the Trump administration’s so-called “SAVE America Act.”

When I was young(er) and naïve about 20 years ago, I spent a few elections as a volunteer poll watcher. What I learned is that the selfless people who administer our elections are incredibly dedicated public servants. Have you recently moved? They’ll walk you back to your car and explain, if necessary, how you can get a copy of a recent utility bill or some other confirmation of your new address. Double voting? I suggest you give that a try in any polling location I ever saw. You’ll escorted off the premises. These fraud claims are a part of a strategy by Republicans to make in an unfounded claim of fraud just in case they lose.
