Vance: Combat dark money in politics
Letter To The Editor

From Diana Vance

Monroe

To the Editor,

Today’s Republicans are doing some very odd things. For example let’s take the Stimulus package President Joe Biden put before the Senate just a little while ago. The bill was extremely favored by about 85 percent of Democrats and 65 per cent of Republicans in the country. Yet not one Republican voted for it when the people were very much in favor of it. I thought “What is going on?”

What I find troublesome with what these Republicans are trying to do is that it smacks of what author Jane Mayer writes about in her book, “Dark Money”. In that book she reveals how the fortunes of the ultra wealthy have been used by many billionaires to pay to get a person elected who will vote for the laws they want. Charles Koch of Koch Industries is perhaps the most famous of these ultra rich donors. He and others control the Republican Party and are not above smearing a candidate with a character assassination ad.

These ultra wealthy billionaires are against climate change for example. We are extremely lucky that we have President Joe Biden who knows we must deal with Climate Change. We have witnessed the terrible storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, white out snow storms and huge fires in California. So for now support the Democrats. President Biden invited Republicans to come on board with the Stimulus package but they refused. So do not be surprised if the Republicans vote against combating the effects of climate change.

The only way you and I can combat this dark money’s influence is with our vote. Republicans know this and so they have begun a nation-wide campaign to influence state legislators to pass voter suppression laws. This is happening in Madison right now. I hope our local newspaper will be covering this because our democracy is at stake. Please vote in every election because your vote will keep our freedoms and democracy prevailing against the ultra wealthy’s desire for a plutocracy.
